I wondered about Richard Lewis as well. It was hard to tell how much of his depression/neurosis. was part of the routine and how much was him. I'm not surprised then to find out he was and also that he really is a kind man.
From your book, I thought it was cool when you met Woody Allen. What I wondered was what was his critique of the show he was reviewing like. And I didn't know that Belzer was as intimidating as he looked.
Richard Belzer was intimidating to young comics but once you get to know him he's a very gentle sweet guy. I was so nervous meeting Woody Allen that I don't even remember.
Richard Lewis is one of the greatest guys in the business. He's so sincere as a person and God is he funny, even more than on stage. He helped me out of a heavy family situation set up all the doctors etc. Just a great human being.
I'm not sure it was crazy but at times it was fun. The best part was those first 5 or 6 years of standup. I dream about it all the time. It was hard work but fun, even when were thought the world was ending after a bad set.
We bombed all the time in the beginning and no one bombed more than Larry David. And when he bombed it was so much fun to watch because you never knew what he going to do or say. LD knew we looked forward to him bombing. He also knew it was only because he made us laugh so hard.
Artie really doesn't know me, so he was just trying to keep the show moving. I also think that he was really enjoying the subject matter and was excited to interject stuff. I understood where he was coming from. He's a very nice guy. And invited me back whenever I want to come back.
